David Melby

Many landscape artists attempt to imitate the landscape. David Melby infuses a sense of poetry in his paintings, knowing that to become art, his work must convey the inner spirit through a celebration of space and light. He does this through a merging of observed and idealized forms. His work, therefore, cannot be an imitation of only what is seen with the eye. It is instead what can be imagined--the inspirational, the intangible, and the intuitive. His is the spiritual experience of sky and land. Within his small surfaces, he is able to capture a vastness and spaciousness of the land which is reminiscent not only of our own Midwestern landscape but vistas of northern Europe. The landscape paintings of David Melby are visual metaphors for the balance of the rational and spiritual within us--quiet moments within the self.

"David Melby's recent exhibit of paintings reveal the artist's introspective meditations communicating silence and solitude. Mood is more relevant than place or season, drawing the viewer into quiet contemplation, silence, and mystery."     -Marilyn Propp, New Art Examiner

"David Melby's oil landscapes are about nature and particularly, the Kansas prairies. He captures a delicacy and luminosity reminiscent of watercolor. These landscapes have a quietness, a beckoning quality to them."     -Victoria Kirsch Melcher, Art News

"David Melby has found a wonderful balance in his work between suggestion and realization... Best of all, his technique is not an end in itself and not a gimmick; his attention to the landscape is sincere and loving.
"The landscape paintings of David Melby look better and better... Melby refers to his paintings as a 'celebration of space and light, a merging of the observed and idealized to form personal psalms.' This statement, I think, expresses exactly the way his work looks and means that Melby knows exactly what he is doing, a rare state of being."     Donald Hoffmann, Kansas City Star

"David Melby's personal style of painting the landscape has gained him an important stature as a painter of that genre. He has developed a close following in Kansas City, throughout the United States, and abroad. All the while he has maintained a quiet, Midwestern approach to his subject. With each exhibition of his work, Melby seems to solidify the belief that a contemporary painter can indeed paint an innovative and exciting landscape."     -David Knaus, Art Gallery
